24-karat gold facial

GOLDEN TOUCH Thanks to the Field Museum’s “Gold” exhibit, there’s a mini gold rush happening in Chicago. And the Spa at the Four Seasons is getting in on the action with its new 24-karat gold facial. In addition to looking good in jewelry form, gold also supposedly carries some age-defying properties. Rumor has it that Cleopatra even slept in a gold mask in order to keep her skin looking young. So, what does this facial at the Four Seasons entail? The same sort of top-notch routine the spa performs during all of its facials. Aesthetician Ludy cleanses and exfoliates my face, allows the steam machine to perform its magic and proceeds with simple extractions. Then she administers the 24-karat gold collagen mask. Since the mask contains gold powder, I was prepared for a metallic smell. But I was pleasantly surprised to find that the treatment features more of a floral, rosy aroma. While the cool mask hydrates, moisturizes and smooths the lines on my face (goodbye undereye bags!), Ludy dips my hands in paraffin wax and massages my shoulders. The service ends in a relaxation room, where a glass of Champagne and gold leaf chocolates await. While I really enjoyed the treatment, I think it would make the perfect gift (the holidays are right around the corner) for a mother. Take her to the Field Museum exhibit and then to the Four Seasons—bring your ticket stub Mondays through Thursdays (through March 6, 2011) and receive a 20 percent discount on the facial. $140 for 50 minutes; $190 for 80 minutes. 120 E Delaware Pl (312-280-8800, fourseasons.com/chicagofs/spa).
