Despite the arrival of the much-discussed Carluccio's, D & C is the probably still the best Italian café in town. Or, more accurately, Italian cafés - for it actually occupies two adjoining spaces on this street. Both are small, dark and crowded, and on a busy day (which is every day), they can feel a touch on the claustrophobic side. But the food is truly wonderful: the tasty, fresh and simple lunches include cured and smoked meats, salads and panini; there's also a full wine list and, of course, superlative coffee.

We enjoyed excellent scrambled egg and ham croissant/scrambled eggs with mushrooms for breakfast so much that we returned to this restaurant for an evening meal. We weren't disappointed! For starters we enjoyed the bruschetta with tomatoes and the special chicken dish was delicious. We couldn't fault the food or the service at this restaurant which has a warm and friendly atmosphere. During our next visit to Dublin, we intend to skip the expensive hotel breakfast and head for D&C each morning. I expect we'll be there a few evenings too!
