Much of Clunie Reid’s borrowed imagery hovers on porn’s outer boundaries – adorned with obscure, sometimes obscene written commentary by the artist. Accompanying her fast-flickering video images, the phrase ‘motion contemplation’ seems about right; ‘cum shot’, though, does not.
The rude words and ambiguous slogans scrawled across these four strobing screens seem to speak about the objectification of women and the fantasy of female acquiescence. However, the trouble with borrowing pictures is that, unless the power of your voice shouts down the original intention, they remain loans. Looking at these cartoon women with their naked bottoms, blow-up busts and coy glances, I’m not sure Reid has much to say about the exploitation of women, in art or in commerce. She murmurs when she should roar.
