Time Out says

Things get scientific at the Estorick as masterpieces from the collection go under the microscope with some revelatory discoveries

This show goes under the skin of the works in this important collection of modern Italian art. Scientists, specialists art historians and restorers were given exclusive access to major work by Giorgio de Chirico, Umberto Boccioni, Giacomo Balla, Gino Severini, Carlo Carrà and Ardengo Soffici to undertake scientific analysis. They discovered the techniques employed by each artist as well as previously unknown aspects of the works, such as a hidden painting on the reverse of one of Soffici’s canvases and an entirely different painting under Balla’s masterpiece ‘The Hand of the Violinist’. Here, each painting, some out of their frames, are showcased next to the scientific and archival research.
