Tameka Norris, 'Bernadine', 2014

Following her ‘Post-Katrina’ series, the American artist’s new paintings draw on her personal connection with New Orleans and the typical shotgun houses of her childhood, titling the work after family members or roads of poignant relevance. In an accompanying video work, Norris looks at the absence of the black body in the history of art by recreating Michelangelo Pistoletto’s sculpture ‘Venus of the Rags’ and imitating the classical Roman statue of Venus.
