Hot on the heels of the Royal Horticultural Society's Chelsea Flower Show in May 2014, this high-summer event takes place over 34 acres in the spectacular grounds of Hampton Court Palace and features world-class gardens as well as marquees showcasing work by some of the country's leading designers and nurseries. There are many opportunities to buy plants, especially at the final-day sale on Sunday, fresh produce and gardening equipment.
This year the show will divided into three zoned areas, with gardens and plants reflecting themes of Grow, Escape and Inspire. In Grow keen gardeners will have access to a range of nursery displays and plant stalls with RHS advisors on-hand to offer expert tips to take back home. In Escape visitors can explore the new Community area or escape into the countryside with a new Nature feature. Inspire will encourage visitors to re-think their preconceptions of contemporary garden design, with horticultural creations pushing boundaries and championing innovation. It will also feature a new turf sculpture competition with entries from the likes of Question Time presenter Matthew Biggs and RA trained sculptor John Humphreys. In the cookery theatre celebrities and experts, including T.V cook Mary Berry and BBC presenter James Wong, will be showcasing their homegrown recipes. The Conceptual Gardens category, which will be themed around the seven deadly sins, is sure to get the traditionalists' feathers ruffled. This year the scarecrow competition, which encourages pupils from schools across the South East to put their own imaginative twists to traditional scarecrow designs, will reflect the theme of the World War I centenary.
Tickets are on sale now including the 'RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show Exclusive Preview Evening’, which takes place on July 7 (5pm-10.30pm; from £55). The first two days of the show (July 8 & 9) are reserved for RHS members. The show is open to everyone July 10-13 with the sell off beginning at 4.30pm on Sunday July 13.
