Nothing much changes at the Dove, one of only a few Broadway Market businesses to predate the street’s gentrification. The staff long ago realised that the formula of great beers (mostly Belgian, plus a few real ales), uncomplicated food (stews, burgers, sausages) and simple decor (lots of wood, much of it a bit battered) was a winner that’d stand the test of time.
As a result, the place now runs itself, chiefly for the benefit of Hackneyites who are quietly disdainful of the two newcomers up the road (the Cat & Mutton and Off Broadway). This autopilot approach to the business doesn’t always work in its favour: the food, particularly, could do with improvement. But this place ain’t going anywhere, and its regulars wouldn’t have it any other way.
