Dukes Hotel has changed hands a few times in recent years, but one thing remains unchanged: this is the hotel bar to visit for a martini. Well-mannered waiters flick dry vermouth into an iced glass, fill it with gin or vodka (various premium options, all priced accordingly) and then drop in a sliver of lemon peel. Simple, but wonderful.
Sipping a drink amid the murmur of the very adult clientele here, while munching nuts and Puglian olives, is one of the most elegant drinking experiences in the city. If you’re looking for a hipster bar, though, look elsewhere; with its engravings and fringed chairs, this tiny but comfortable space looks like a Georgian railway carriage, and the atmosphere is surprisingly sober.
