This historic gem of a pub would be noteworthy whatever its location; amid the unpromising mess of bookies, takeaways and pound shops that together comprise Acton High Street, it stands out a mile.
After 250 years and a recent spruce-up, it’s now kept in excellent nick by the latest in a string of landlords, whose names – starting with ‘David Simman (1759)’ – are etched on to a board in the bar.
Tap beers include Hoegaarden, Litovel, Palm, Leffe and a variety of Fuller’s ales; in common with other pubs in the Remarkable Restaurants mini-chain, the wines are good but more expensive than they ought to be.
The big decorative surprise comes with the large room to the rear, whose back bar is topped with a sign for ‘Bonds and Dealers’, and statues of two bare-breasted nymphs hoisting lights.
