Although its thunder has been stolen by the newer Old Brewery, the Greenwich Union remains the spiritual home of Alistair Hook’s Meantime mission to bring German-style beers to the British public.
Six tap options – the likes of Helles and Wheat – complement two dozen or more international labels by the bottle, including the little-seen Schneider Aventinus, Aecht Schlenkerla Marzen (a smoked beer otherwise only available in its native Bamberg) and Cantillon Gueuze.
Food runs from a humble bacon butty to chargrilled steaks; you’ll also find wines, coffees and teas. Throw in imagery by Hook’s schoolmate Ray Richardson, framed covers from Picture Post and a small front terrace, and you have a very tidy operation.
