The well-established bar of Knightsbridge’s Mandarin Oriental now operates partly as a holding pen for people waiting to bag a walk-in table at the hotel’s high-profile restaurant, Dinner by Heston Blumenthal. But this only adds to the frisson; it’s a great place for people watching, and the service here is as well drilled and charming as you’d expect from a five-star outfit. The floor is as shiny as a banker’s pearl cufflink, and the size of the cocktails bespeaks an era that recession forgot.
They’re not bad, either: a bit sweet (five spoonfuls is a lot of sugar, even for a caipirinha) but well balanced, and they really are huge. There’s no obligatory service charge, which, given that the staff are splendid and the posh nibbles are replenished at five-minute intervals, is a pleasant surprise.
