The Dove's prime riverside location means it comes into its own on Boat Race day, but this historic pub is well worth a visit throughout the year.
There are a few pubs amid the rowing clubs, dog-walkers and welcome benches on the Upper Mall embankment west of Hammersmith Bridge; this one is certainly the best (and a prime spot from which to watch the Boat Race).
The Dove makes much of its history: a handbill details the comings and goings of Charles II and Nell Gwynn, while an 1897 photograph is one of the many visual nods to its prime location. But it’s too cosy and genuine to leave to the tourists.
As Mr Fuller was one of the gentlemen involved in a 1796 takeover of the enterprise, it’s no surprise to find the full range of Fuller’s ales at the bar; they’re always in excellent condition.
Inside, it’s basically a classic duck-your-head heritage pub experience, with a fire in the winter, but most drinkers come here to sit in the vine-entangled conservatory or the riverside terrace overlooking the houseboats.

Found this little gem of a pub almost by accident after wandering along the Thames path from Hammersmith Bridge. What a find ! It's remarkably unspoilt, a real London Pub. No gaming machines or background music. Great ambience, good selection of Beers, staff were friendly and helpful. The only slight negative was that we found the food slightly over-priced, though still very nice.
A hidden gem for secret trysts; just like an entrance hall in the country. This pub is very welcoming and quiet for the right moment...
An example of a real awesome Elizabethan architecture, situated in one of the most characteristic corner of Hammersmith on Thames..beautiful!
The fact that this place overlooks the river is definitely it's main selling point. The food is good but not amazing and the service is pretty average. The tables are all quite close together so the atmosphere is friendly and there is a really good selection of beers so still worth a visit.
Unfortunately our last visit to The Dove was a real let down. The staff serving tables are really un attentive & do not seem interested in ensuring you receive good service. It didn't occur to our waitress when one person was sitting there with an empty place that perhaps there had been a mistake with our order. After waiting for 10 minutes we bought it to their attention & instead of receiving an apology from the person who we assume was the manageress, she accused us of not giving them the correct order. Even if this had been the case, which it certainly was not as we had written down our table's order with 2of us going up to place the order, as the saying goes, the customer is always right. We didn't receive an apology for the oversight from any member of staff & I ended up going without food. This is absolutely appalling. They seriously need to invest in sending their staff on a customer service course. All credit to the chef though, the food that was consumed by my fellow diners was of good quality but the venue is seriously let down by the staff which is a real shame. I will certainly stop recommending The Dove to friends as a venue to eat.
Went to this beautiful looking pub on the river but turned out to be a disaster. The waitress was unfriendly. We ordered drinks and food upon arrival but the beers took 15 minutes to arrive. The barman seemingly did not get the ticket order. We had to ask the waitress 3 times for the drinks. The food was the worst part. The fish & chips meal: chips were fine, but the fish was the definition of insipid and the mushy peas looked like they had been left out for too long before being served. The canelloni was definitely microwaved and at £10.50 I expected more than that. When I asked the waitress if it was cooked on site or microwaved from frozen (which it evidently was) she obviously lied. Then the managed came to ask if there was a problem, but didn't do anything about it. We just left the food, finished our drinks and tried to enjoy the view. But I would not be going back there and I do not recommend this place. Tacky and cheap.
