sad brixton

What used to be the best pub in brixton is now a shell of its former self. After the apparent turfing out of the old land lord and staff, last year, the place has not just gone down hill but belly flopped with an almighty splash into the puddle at the bottom of the barrel. The picture hooks, left bare, hanging from the ceiling and walls, serve as clawing reminders of the pleasures this place used to hold. The decor, the atmosphere, the food, the 'music'....all gone sour. As a resident of brixton, with no other motive than the desire to have a drink in a pleasant local pub, i post this review with the hope that one day this pub will return to its former glory.

My two stars are for the excellent beer garden - it's huge and was lovely sit in now that we are finally having some sunshine. Unfortunately, that is where the good news ends. The food was awful. My fish and chips arrived partially raw, when I sent it back they took it back to the kitchen and returned it - without fish and just burned batter and some skin stuck to it. I couldn't believe it. Another member of our group had to give his fish back for the same reason. The rest had braised beef or pork belly. The accompanying yorkshire puddings were stale and hard as a rock. In summary, by all means, go and sit in the fabulous beer garden in the sunshine. As for the food, stay well clear. Brixton has such excellent food these days (all of Brixton Village, Courtesan, The Prince Regent, New Fujiyama...), don't waste your time with the shabby, over-priced food and the exceedingly rude manager from this place.
