There’s no faulting the beer at this grand old corner pub, which had lain derelict for a spell before being revived by the Individual Pubs group in 2006.

The 16 handpumps on the long bar are rarely all in operation, but there’s usually a wide selection of ales: regular guest ales join the core collection from Cambridge’s Milton Brewery, from the gentle Minotaur mild to the lively, pungent Marcus Aurelius stout, and three beer festivals a year (March, July and November) bring further variety.

Despite the best efforts of the staff and the presence of a bar billiards table (there’s also pool and board games), the beer is certainly the main attraction: the vast, brightly lit bar room feels like a youth hostel canteen, and an absence of soft furnishings has created acoustics that don’t aid conversation.

This place is solid: a spacious, no-frills pub with decent food and even better ciders. My husband and I dropped by here last night around 8:30pm after leaving Oslo since they don't have takeaway boxes (really stupid). Pembury does! The friendly barstaff with the long black hair was very friendly on offering cider samples (love the elderflower cider!) and recommending food. I got the beet salad with olives, goat cheese and crispy butternut squash   and my husband got the Crudo & Rucola pizza for £9.25 with Tomato & Mozzarella with Tangy Roquette & aged Parma Ham. I enjoyed my dish with the tangy dressing over it (save for the beets which are sliced large rather than in slivers- yes I know I'm picky) whilst he said the pizza was alright (I liked the doughy pizza crusts but him not so much).

I would come back just for the ciders!

Great selection of beers, most of which you'll have never heard of - pizzas are always good. The place has retained it's rough & ready feel in the face of gentrification taking place all around it and is all the better for it.

Friendly pub, great range of ciders, beers and ales plus amazing pizza! Staff always friendly and accommodating to dietary requirements plus they offer cash back when paying with a card.

really unfriendly for children, parents be aware- you gonna get kicked out ay 20:00 sharp without any special warning or refund for food or drinks very disappointing...

Good range of beers, fantastic pizza, bar billiards table. Decor would be charitably described as "basic" - aura of miners' social club c1948.

Definitely agree about the acoustics. You practically have to yell to each other...
