Neil Rankin has now joined the Princess of Shoreditch and the menu has since changed. The review below refers to the previous menu. - The Food and Drink Editors, July 2014

Up the spiral staircase from the bustling downstairs bar, the dining room at this 250-year-old corner premises is a good-looking, cosy space. A dozen linen-clothed tables – candlelit at night – are served by a small team of young, efficient staff.

Choosing from a menu that included wild boar scotch egg, Chart Farm fallow deer and a host of seasonal goodies wasn’t easy, but the kitchen more than fulfilled its remit. Rich ham hock, foie gras and pork knuckle terrine benefited from tangy piccalilli, and sour goat’s cheese was a lovely foil for the sweetness of roasted red and yellow heritage beetroot. Mains of beer-battered fish and chips with mushy peas and tartare sauce, and Cornish brill with pea purée and black pudding were done to a T; the last ingredient slightly overpowered the purée, but it’s a minor quibble. Simple but effective afters might be chocolate fondant with vanilla ice-cream, or an artisan cheese sold by the slice – the Lancashire ‘strong bomb’ is sensational.

There’s a choice of wine by the glass and carafe, as well a wide range of bottles (including five rosés), which goes for interesting tastes over establishment favourites and is aware of current trends: the wine of the month when we last visited was from the Lebanon. There are also local beers, such as Wandle Ale from Sambrook’s in Battersea, on tap, and East London Brewery's Nightwatchman. A top-notch operation, now joined by sister pub the Lady Ottoline in Bloomsbury.

A really cute gastro pub, lovely buzzy dining room, great food. Had a birthday dinner here with a large group of friends, service was excellent.

I've eaten both upstairs and downstairs here. When busy, the service can be very slow, but the food is delicious - well, the sunday roasts are anyway! I haven't had anything else here.


Ate in the dining room upstairs, evening. Overall a great place. My friend voted the vegetarian wellington main as in her top 5 dishes ever. Fish cakes with poached egg were amazing. Main was pork belly, braised cheek and black pud croquettes and was delicious. Good cheese selection. Would have been more reassuring if our waiter knew anything about the dishes he was serving would be my only gripe. Recommended.

Sunday roast. Job Done. Arriving at The Princess after trawling around London for a busy Sunday we were greeted by 40 craft beers in the bottle and a European focused wine list. We settled in at the bar and awaited for our table with complimentary newspapers and chat from the staff. We decided that we would have starters and mains and my guest went for the potted crab with mango salsa, avocado on toast myself the rabbit & chicken rillettes, cornichons, toast. Both were absolutely delicious. In terms of mains you can go for a mixed roast, shoulder of lamb, pork belly, sirloin or the roasted guinea fowl to share. We were lucky enough to get the last guinea fowl and it was a cracker. Arriving on a wooden board with a carving knife we were left to our own devices and ate it all. Coming with yorkshire puddings (huge) and vegetables we were absolutely stuffed. We did manage the fondant for dessert. Go there and you'll not be disappointed.

Arrived on a bustling Thursday night, buzzing atmosphere, starters of duck rilletes and Goats cheese with beetroot salad were good, but mains were poor, a piece of sole that was very tired and the butternut squash gnocchi accompanying the OK pollack was solid to the point of being unedible, mentioned this to the waiter clearing away but no visible impact on him, or the bill - shame, having had a much better experience at The Lady Ottoline last week.


Seem as though it's been getting warmer, me and my friend decided to visit The Princess, somewhere I've been waiting to visit for a long time. I had been toying with the idea of going upstairs to the Dining Room, but when we walked into the Pub area, it seemed like a perfect place to have drinks and some food on such a nice day. We were welcomed with huge smiles by all the staff around, and, as if they knew our plans, offered a table and more smiles and giggles was delivered by the very lovely and quite hilarious waitress. We sat, and were instantly offered the menu, and drinks. The menu was extensive and exiting. I opted for razor clams for starters and my friend chose the 'London Peculiar' soup. The waitress explained what the 'London Peculiar' was, and it was an interesting and animated explanation, service is incredible, the staff really make you feel like long lost friends. My clams were gorgeous, garlicky and vibrant green in colour, my friends soup was gorgeous, a smoky ham and pea concoction! I liked the little touches, the constant waters being topped up, the smiles and also the waitress remembered exactly what we had been drinking, and as I'm quite fussy, made them especially for me! Talk about service! I will be coming here again partly because of the food, but mostly because of the second to none service by the lovely staff.


Have been here loads of times and it never dissappoints. Had a large table booked here on Saturday night and we left so happy. The staff looked after us so well and the food was great. Thank you guys! .


Went here for dinner on Wednesday and it was great. This please is such a little gem, with really friendly staff and a great atmosphere. I had the Stone bass and my friend had the lamb and we shared a sticky toffee pudding for dessert - the best I have ever had. Highly recommendable.
