Although this fusion of two Victorian pubs is certainly large, the Crown & Greyhound is also surprisingly cosy, split up as it is into various dark wood-panelled rooms with robust tables, carved wooden seating and nicotined ceilings.

Black and red tiles chequer the floor around the semi-circular bar, where a guest ale sits alongside London Pride, Sharp's Doom Bar and Harveys Sussex Best to tempt the all-and-sundry collection of mums, nippers, builders, students and tourists who gather here.

At the rear, alongside a restaurant section with a nice conservatory, solid outdoor tables make light work of the substantial portions of food brought by the amiable staff (there's also a Sunday carvery).

Two black-hooded barbecues await orders when summer brings hordes to a back garden in which an enormous, seen-it-all-before horse chestnut tree holds sway.

This place has really gone downhill. The food is absolutely dreadful, the beer remains ok but the place is a fraction as good as it could be and the food is badly letting it down. Please improve guys!
