A late-afternoon visit to the Half Moon can be a sobering experience. The selection of beers on offer - Kronenbourg, Fosters, Adnams bitter - will be as low-key as the atmosphere, unaided by the size of the place. Still, things improve markedly in the evenings, when Herne Hillians descend on this Victorian boozer and the pub's pulse quickens.
While a little tatty in places, it's really a handsome spot, its old-school grandeur having just about lasted down the years. At the end of the bar is a fine snug where mirrors painted long ago with slightly awry paintings of water fowl adorn the walls and a La Spaziale coffee machine gurgles in the background. There's music in the back room, but it's unlikely to be of much interest if you are not personally acquainted with the people who are playing it.
