A pavement smoking-and-drinking seating area consisting of planks of wood placed on beer barrels doesn't promise much. However, a peek inside the flower-fringed open window reveals that this is an agreeable little place, a cosy, ages-old pub decked out in ancient copper utensils, London street signs and remarkable pop memorabilia.

The clientele is working-nearby regulars for the most part; you can spot the occasional tourist as they gawp through the dimness to marvel at a poster for the Beatles' Royal Command Performance of 1963, along with a napkin that was once used by Elvis and a newspaper article about the landlord's £500 bid to buy it. Ales might include Bombardier and selections from the Brodie's brewery in Leyton; the food (doorstep sandwiches and the like) doesn't deviate from the old-fashioned path.

I like Jeanie's comment, as I was working that night, which means that my service was just complimented. It's an awesome pub and there aren't many around like it, especially in Covent Garden. It is a little bit like working in a furnace though.
