Damon Albarn, the versatile Blur and Gorillaz frontman, follows up his opera 'Monkey: Journey to the West' with a fascinating piece examining ritual and symbolism in Britain, past and present, through the life of Dr John Dee, a confidante of Elizabeth I who dabbled in the dark arts of mathematics, alchemy, astrology, magic and spying. Directed by Rufus Norris, it was well reviewed at its premiere at the 2011 Manchester International Festival. The conductor is André de Ridder. (A co-commission between English National Opera and Manchester International Festival; two 45-minute acts plus one interval; Not recommended for under-14s.
