I moved to the area recently and the Hamlet was ideally located to adopt as my local bar. Whilst the interior is nice and quite eclectic the prices and staff completely let what could be an ice local bar down. Let's be honest, Streatham Hill is not the West End and therefore I do not expect to be confronted by obnoxious and snobbish bar staff acting like they're cocktail waiters at the Ritz. I was refused service at the bar and was instead made to sit down and told my drinks would be brought over. The waiter even blocked my access to the bar when I got up to go and investigate which beers they had on offer- he insisted on making me sit down so he could tell me about them instead. I soon found out why. When I got my bill they'd slapped on a service charge of nearly £2!! I only bought two pints and the bill was over £10!! The place is tiny so I got charged through the nose for someone to walk less than 10 yards with my drinks. Another time (against my better judgement) I went there again about bought a standard brand whiskey and a house red and it came to £14. The bar staff tried to impose a more premium brand of whiskey on to me but I wasn't having any of it. They still took the liberty of automatically pouring a double measure without asking me. I won't go there again- the bar staff make you feel tense, the drinks are priced far higher than the area average and to be honest I've never seen it packed or too busy- presumably because customers can only afford one round before havving to head home! It's situated in a local area and should cater more for local people. In its current state it would be more suited to a West End location.
