Amazing dinner here last night. There is a lovely atmosphere throughout the bar and restaurant. The wait staff are friendly and chatty. The food was perfect, my friend had lamb cooked to perfection and I had gnocchi, like I've never had before. Yes it's expensive but totally worth every penny and the cocktails are divine!

Now a fine exponent of Kit Kemp’s much imitated fusion of flowery English and avant-garde, this gorgeous hotel was once a dental hospital. Public rooms have genuine Bloomsbury Set paintings, by the likes of Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell, while bedrooms mix English understatement with bold flourishes: soft beiges and greys spiced up with plaid-floral combinations. The huge, comfortable beds and trademark polished granite and oak bathrooms are suitably indulgent, and some rooms have unbelievably high ceilings. The Oscar restaurant and bar are classy and always busy with a smart crowd from the area’s media and ad offices. On Sundays, combine a three-course set meal with a classic film screened in the mini-cinema.

I recently stopped off for a drink and a bar snack at the Charlotte street hotel. It was a beautiful later summer afternoon and it struck me as the perfect venue to sit and watch the world go by whilst I waited for a friend to finish work. I managed to secure a table outside after about 15 minutes, after finally convincing the waiter that I could move a seat from a table where two people were seated and there were three chairs to a table where no one was seated and there were no chairs. I ordered a glass of rose, which struck me at £11 for the glass as a bit over the top but heh, it was a treat and a bar snack of chillicheese toast. I waited a not insignificant amount of time for it to arrive. Sadly, I probably should have cancelled the order. A strip of flaccid, under done white slice bread arrived, cut into six squares, on top of which was barely melted sliced cheese of indistinguishable origins and placed ceremoniously in the center of each square was a slice of raw chilli. Yes, technically, it had fulfilled the brief. I was so astonished at being charged £7.50 so something so borderline inedible that I couldn't actually bring myself to complain. The complacency of the kitchen in thinking that this was in anyway acceptable food to serve to paying customers was truly speech defying. It's a shame, I love the venue, but until someone gives the kitchen a kick up the backside, I won't be going back unless of course the head chef should need someone to show him how to make a half decent slice of chilli cheese on toast, in which case, just give me a shout - it's really rather easy!
