Sister hotel to Hazlitt's, the Rookery has long been something of a celebrity hideaway deep in Clerkenwell. Its front door is satisfyingly hard to find, especially when the streets around are teeming with Fabric devotees; the front rooms can be noisy on these nights, but the place is otherwise as creakily calm as a country manor house. Once inside, guests enjoy an atmospheric warren of rooms, each individually decorated in the style of a Georgian townhouse: huge clawfoot baths, elegant four-posters, brass shower fittings. There's an honesty bar in the bright and airy drawing room at the back, which opens on to a sweet little patio. The ground-floor suite has its own hallway, a cosy boudoir and a subterranean bathroom. Topping it all is the huge split-level Rook's Nest suite, which has views of St Paul's Cathedral.
