The giant inflatable upside-down purple cow known as the Udderbelly has become one the most distinctive and best loved venues at the Edinburgh Festival since it first landed in its August home on Bristo Square in 2006. This summer this glorious eyesore returns to the South Bank, cocking a snook at the politicians in the Houses of Parliament a few hundred metres across Old Father Thames. For three months it will hold a tremendously varied festival of comedy, music, magic, circus, theatre and children's shows.

The Udderbelly festival on the Southbank brings a little taste of the Edinburgh Fringe to London. It's weird but true that a huge upended purple cow has now become synonymous with Summer in London. The Udderbelly's formula is a winner year on year: cartoon colourful beer garden, varied and delicious street food stalls and a lineup of the most popular acts from last year's fringe that include comedy, spoken word, circus, cabaret and the odd bit o' acting. I recently saw Austentatious improv comedy group who are hands down genius. Turning suggestions for new Austen 'novels' from the audience into a hour's worth of completely ad-lib entertainment they are masters of the art form and deserve their regular slot at Udderbelly over the last few years. As well as famous comedians there are up and coming acts like Circa who are a hugely impressive young circus group alongside shows for Kids like Braniac live. Tickets are inexpensive and there are good deals for booking in advance.

You're enjoying London properly if you still haven't been to the purple cow belly in Southbank.

From some cool food stands (I recommend Zoe's Ghana Kitchen), to Pims and Waffles, without forgetting the great shows you can see everyday.

Just have a look to their calendar gigs and I'm sure you'll find something that was tailored for you.

Don't wait anymore, join the purple cow belly fan club.

This is such a cool spot! South-bank is a lovely location anyway, but throw in this little pop-up and you have a winner. I went to see a show at the Udderbelly, and waited in the little faux garden area with a couple friends as we waited for the show to start. It has a lovely atmosphere, and is a great place to go in the summer for a couple of drinks, and a chinwag.
