The owners call this popular place Allpress Espresso, but that does a disservice to one of its really distinguished features: a small group of brewed coffees. Excellent beans (we had a single-origin Costa Rican) are roasted on the premises, in the big roaster that sits behind a glass wall to the right of the door. Two days a week you can watch the roasting, or attend a roasting class if you’re really serious about your beans.
The generous cup came out piping hot, and had proper creamy smoothness. An espresso was a little less successful, its crema going flat and not as hot as it should have been; sitting around while the Costa Rican finished dripping might have been the problem.
Every single sandwich looked like something we would like to eat, and a couple of plates of scones with fresh berries, jam and clotted cream were food fit for the gods. Hot chocolate was a dream: chocolate pieces sitting at the bottom of a glass of hot milk. Stir, slurp, swoon. Allpress is always crowded, and it’s easy to see why.
