Asakusa may not live up to the grandeur of its namesake Tokyo temple, but that doesn’t stop this shabby little Camden restaurant from pulling in the crowds. The lack of windows and a low ceiling make the whole place a little dark, though the diminutive red, white and black dining room is far from sombre – and neither are the smiling staff.
The long menu covers a range of classic dishes including reasonable sushi and crisp vegetable tempura. For the budget-conscious, there are set meals such as ginger pork or beef teriyaki, all served with rice and miso soup: a snip at around £8. If you’re feeling adventurous, try some authentic (read unusual) skewers from the specials menu. These include chicken gizzards and chicken skin as well as tamer options.
Highlights of our most recent meal were super-fresh squid nigiri served with a sliver of shiso leaf; slow-simmered sweet and salty pork with a dab of fiery mustard; and chestnut ice-cream packed with nutty chunks to finish. We accompanied it all with a bottle of crisp Asahi Super Dry and some complimentary green tea.
