If you are looking for the unconnected restaurant run by Australian chef Bill Granger, called Granger & Co, click here; Bill's (London) is not connected to bills (Sydney).
Growing like topsy, Bill’s now stretches from its East Sussex home right across the south of England and into Wales. This St Martin’s Courtyard branch was the first in the capital and now one of two in Covent Garden alone. The formula is clearly working. Grocery-lined shelves add plenty of colour, if not turnover. Cutlery is piled in old McCann’s oatmeal tins. Blackboards are ‘chalked’ with recipes, chirpy ideas for increasing your spend, and invitations to become friends on Facebook. The broad menu and relaxed style suits many an occasion, from breakfast to post-theatre cocktails. Several tables were indulging in traditional afternoon tea on our visit (at under a tenner, it’s a wallet-friendly alternative to nearby hotels), but we opted for the ‘lighter mains’ section of the menu. Grilled sea bream wasn’t London’s most sparkling, and paired with a ‘cous cous’ of grated raw cauliflower, watercress and lemon, the predominant flavour was bitterness. Warm pecan pie arrived a mix of searingly hot and lukewarm in temperature, though the flavour was fine and the malted banana ice-cream that accompanied it was delicious. Service was well meaning if a tad slow and scatty. In all, Bill’s is good to know.

I've booked a table for myself and my husband for breakfast. Food was great! Fresh and lovely presented. The staff were polite and not pushy to clear the table. I would say that a booking in advance is a must as when we came to sit down, a very long queue has formed very quickly.
Had breakfast a few days ago based on the reccomendations on this site. Food, coffee and other drinks were all execellent, as was the service. Not sure what would ever please some of the unimpressed people on this site. I travel all over the world for work reasons and and rarley come across better for breakfast.
Bills is ok. The service is excellent. I chose scrambled eggs & salmon on toast. Eggs were a touch cold & my extra hot Latte was warm at best. The menu for breakfast is small. Very nice setting even if the chairs aren't the most comfortable.
Visiting from sydney and couldn't find anywhere else in covent garden. Seriously average food. Host was nice and though the rest of the service staff were slow, he promptly replaced my served-cold chips with a fresh hot ones upon my request. Still, the supposedly gourmet hamburger was super greasy and i could have had a better equivalent meal at mcdonalds. Oh and when i requested the berry and banana smoothie without the berries, they apologised but all their smoothies were pre-made "fresh" (contradiction much) that morning with the berries already in them - they didn't think that it would have taken less time to make me a plain banana smoothie than explain this awfully dull fact. Cappuccino was bad-foamy and separated from the milk. Will not be returning.
Went to Covent Garden with two children. Good but not great food but appalling service. Despite table being vacated shortly after we arrived it took an age to be seated! Jamie's, next door, the previous night, was a much better deal, with staff much more attentive to the need to deal with children's needs quickly. Even the table next to us, four grown men, left after not receiving any service. It is a bit rich to add 12.5% gratuity when there is no service!
came for breakfast on our last visit to London and it certainly will be a regular haunt on our regular trips. We stayed in a hotel nr by that wanted £29 per head for english breakfast, so instead we stumbled on Bills by total chance, the 2 of us had a full english, french toast, 2 coffee's and a pot of tea all for under £30 - service was great - nothing fancy, nothing was too much trouble - nice music - food was more than acceptable, the portions were hearty and filled us up for most of the day - there is nothing to fault with Bill's other than there isnt one locally to us. if your looking for posh surrounding and white glove service then this isnt for you, but if you want good food, good service and a good atmosphere then give it a try you wont be dissapointed.
Went on Frid 6th July 2012. Really good, quite lively, noisy but i liked that, with two friends very busy but wasn't rushed. Friend had fish pie, nice but too small for price. I had piri piri chicken and rice, lovely huge portion, good price. Get yourself there for a good meal oh the house white was absolutely lovely cold yum.
Quiet morning and lots of tables free but had to wait for 10 minutes - really - whilst the waitress on the door finished her phone conversation (with a friend) before asking if I could take a seat. I was standing next to her and she mouthed 'sorry' and smiled, but made no attempt to finish her chat! I don't understand how anyone can work in a restaurant and not understand that your job is to serve customers. Food was good; service was pretty poor. Staff didn't seem to know what to do and forgot to bring drinks/bill etc.
Good Sunday brunch. No idea why anyone would outsiders stay away!!! London may be the wrong city for you! Outsiders welcome!
Mediocre food. Not salvaged by being especially good value either. So many better places to go. Islington restaurant tucked out of the way and I wouldn't make the detour again .
Covent Garden was poor overall. Starters were promising but mains were average, one of which came with missing parts, and the salad was going rotten. ( may I also add we got no apology ) Head waiter/greeter at the door was in casual wear and seemed displeased to be there. Avoid!
Only been to the one in islington and I love it! Service is always very attentive, food was good, love their coffee., decor is very chic!
Went with 12 girls this morning to celebrate a friends 50th - what a great place to go. Service great especially for 12 - all hot food - I had the full English - nothing could be faulted - a MUST GO TO - big queue out side the door when we left of people trying to get tables - deffo go again.
Went with 3 friends, service really poor, first guy wanted to sit us on a large comunal table, as the restaurant was quite empty we asked if he could push two tables of two together instead so we could have some privacy. This was done begrudgingly, miserably and slowly. Our waitress took our order whilst leaning with her elbows on the table, abruptly leaving when two of us hadn't ordered yet. Her english very poor so we struggled to understand her. Asked for the bill and waited 20 minutes before we managed to catch her eye whilst she was chatting at the till and she saw us and suddenly remembered us. Overall the experience was a bit ludicrous, whilst on one hand 2-3 staff, jazz handed and sing-songed, the minute we sat down to take drinks, then food, when we hadnt even looked at the menu to a waitress who didn't wait for us all to order and then left us for 20 mins to get our bill. This was the covent garden one, wouldn't go again
Went for brunch today. Food lovely, fresh and excellent quality. Service mediocre with a smile from the waitresses but the female and male managers were friendly and helpful. I will definitely go again.
This place is amazing! Went there for the first time with a bunch of work mates for breakfast and absolutely adored it. The service was excellent and food was divine. Go early (we got there at about 10:15) as by 11am the queue was out of the door, however, at no time did we feel under pressure to give up our table. Highly recommended!
Good food but dodgy service. We arrived to a dirty table. Domineering manageress brushed crumbs off the table onto my mum's seat(?!), said she come and wipe table but never did. Senior staff seemed preoccupied by the displays of jams, and occasionally would boss about the smiley but rather hapless staff. Not much attention paid to diners. Food was fine: nice but not special.
I think that the team here have taken on board all the comments below as the service was great, the food was totally yummy and the music/ambience perfect. We both had a fab evening and would definitely be returning / recommending.
Great place - 16 of us in a famil party after the Lion King matinee Very friendly, informal, welcoming Very good food Good value An Oasis in over-crowded Covent Garden What more would you want! Thank you
One of the worst brunches I've ever had... We waited 20 minutes for it just to find one of the fried eggs 'broken' and the yolk oozing out and the 'bubble and squeak' was just a huge lump of mash. Worst still was the manageress of the restaurant making a bizarre attempt to convince me that the mash was in fact bubble and squeak. I believe I know what the difference is between the two! Overall, a pretty poor experience. A lot of hype over the restaurant but the standards fall well short of my expectations I will not go back there again
I used to love Bill's but lately they disappointed me way too many times and lost me from a faithful and royal customer. Not only that, I would go 3 times a week and always introduce it to new people and I was even planning to have my birthday dinner there but a series of disasters from them, rude and unhelpful reponses from them. The last drop was when I went with two friends and one of them had beer, after AFTER she had finished her beer the rude waitress came and said that it's their policy that they have to order a starter with alcohol. She said that AFTER the beer was finished, not before she ordered it. My friend wasn't hungry but ordered something that she didn't eat... how incredibly RUDE is that. I'm NEVER going there again, I am utterly appalled and ashamed to have brought anyone in there
From the street this looked like a winner but Food was average. Portions were small and service I am still waiting for some.
I commented about the service being spot on now in my previous post, but forgot to include a star rating - 5/5 considering the price point
My girlfriend and I popped along to Bills for a Saturday morning breakfast after hearing good things. Total letdown! Service started off good but swiftly went down hill. Our food (Bills breakfast) was cold which is probably all you need to know - even the beans that cost £1 extra! Discerning breakfasters go elsewhere. This one is for the tourists.
I am a regular in Bill's due to its great location near my office. Fantastic breakfast and always a good atmosphere.
Food quite nice, but in small, disappointing portions. Wanted breakfast but had missed it by ten minutes and told it was not available and nothing could be done nor was any attempt made!. Neither could we sit where we would have liked. We probably should have left before eating and are unlikely to go back .
I had the grilled chorizo burger and my partner in crime the garlic chicken breast for dinner. None too impressed. The chorizo wasn't bad, to be fair, but the chicken was only so so. I had a bloody mary, too, and that was definitely lacking luster. I don't reckon I'll be going back any time soon. Three stars from me anyway because the food's pretty standard, the service wasn't as bad as other comments suggested and I like the crazily lit building next in the same square. It makes you feel like you're in the Tron movie.
Like the one in Lewes so was pleased to see the one opening in Covent Garden. Good place to go if you don't want to have any conversation with your friends! It had VERY LOUD MUSIC when we were there which made people shout so the din was awful! Twice we asked for the music to be turned down which they did for a short while but then it was turned up again - obviously for the benefit of the staff not the customers! Great shame as the service, staff and food were all fine but it was completely spoilt by the uncomfortably loud music.
Been to the Brighton one and it was fantastic. Came to the London one in Covent Garden and service is dire. If you enjoy non-existent service and incompetent staff come here.
