French pâtisseries are rare on the streets of Finsbury Park, so Boulangerie Bon Matin’s pretty window display is a nice surprise. As the name suggests, this café is more of a morning venue, with the kitchen closing at 3.30pm, but until then, warm sandwiches, quiches and salads are on offer alongside a breakfast and brunch menu. From a range of cakes and pastries that runs from fruit tarts to chocolate gateaux, the blueberry financier caught our eye; this little almond-flour based cake was light but moist, with a juicy blueberry-filled centre. Cheesecake was pleasant though a little dry. Breads are another speciality; the choice includes various types of rye as well as a traditional french stick. The café’s bare brick walls display work by local artists, and there’s a lovely light-filled extension at the back. One final plus – the coffee is worth ordering; enjoy it while flicking through one of the many newspapers supplied.
