Is there a better spot in London for an Argentinian steak joint than this, right on the edge of Blackheath? Gazing through the big windows, that could be the pampas out there, where those famously flavoursome cattle are raised. The interior is promising too: small, intimate, a little higgledy-piggledy. With all the framed images on the walls, from photos of celebrities (the Queen, Rod Stewart) to a pencil sketch of Lionel Messi, it’s pleasingly unpretentious too, like a restaurant in La Boca. This down-to-earth vibe was reinforced by the presence of pizza and pasta on the menu, alongside the classics, and the chalked-up soup of the day: ‘mixed vegetables’ is all it said. No shame in that. There was shame, however, in a starter of sweetbreads that were caked in charcoal. Our polite complaint was met with what seemed like suppressed annoyance. A steak also went unfinished – we had wanted medium (not maximum) rare. A pizza genovese would have been fine if it wasn’t so soggy underneath, and for £14.70 too. The best part was the bread, a robust French-style loaf. The heath was looking very bleak as we left – the pampas it ain’t.

I'm rating the Greenwich Buenos Aires Cafe, which I went yesterday with a friend. We are local and both have 9 months babies, the place is very family/baby friendly and a comfy sofa ideal for moms. The place was empty when we arrived and after waiting 10 min seated we realized we needed to order in the counter, but even though none of the waiters came to make that clear but waited reading a magazine in the other side of the room, when I ask him about it he replied: "I don't serve in the tables" which was very rude! I won't come back to that place, is a shame because ir pretty and local, but it lets the service down.
I think Timeout's ££ guide is outdated. i went last Sunday and the mains were from £12-30+, and that's without any sides, just the slab of ribeye or sirloin per se. the steaks were tasty but the service disappointing. when the steaks arrived, the waitress asked what sauces we would like. there were 4 of us - one asked for english mustard, another for dijon mustard and another for ketchup (to go with the side of chips we ordered. we also ordered 2 other sides.). the sauces arrived, then one more person asked for mayonaise, to which the waitress replied in an exasperated tone: "oh right, NOW you want mayonaise." she disappeared upstairs and took a long time to return with a small pot of mayo, accompanied by a sarcastic "SO, u sure u have everything u want now? nothing else?". later when the bill arrived, we were charged £2.50 for the "traditional" mayo, which actually tasted worse than Heinz, and which we hardly touched. altho the menu said chimichurri would be served with every steak ordered, we were given only one small pot to be shared. really very parsimonious service. i did not think the entire experience was worth the nearly £100 bill we ran up there.
We're regulars here and I can't give it enough praise. Not only are the Argentinian steaks an absolute joy, but the staff are so incredibly friendly - they always tell me they'll try and fill me up and last time they brought me two steaks (which I finished, obviously)!
After hearing good things about the restaurant we decided to go. We were expecting good quality meat but instead we got very disappointed. The meat in the mixt grill platter was so hard that it was nearly impossible to eat. Even if we told the waiter they charged us the full bill and they didn't even apologise.
I therefore wouldn't recommend to anybody this restaurant unless they want to pay a lot of money to eat cardboard meat.
Tried this with two friends a little while back and we had a very nice bottle of red along with the steak platter (lots of different steaks without any offer of sauces) which seemed like a good idea to a bunch of carnivores but at the end of it I was regretting ordering it as it didn't work eating rump, ribeye, sirloin etc without very nice sides to go with it. It was quite bland but i guess (my choice for selecting this dish) Wasn't great value either and I would rather go to a place like flatiron in soho for a very tasty and reasonably priced steak.
Absolutely fabulous restaurant as soon as i walked through the door i really felt the warmth and homeliness of it. Been back so many times and i have to say is my all time favourite restaurant. Fantastic and i really recommend it to everyone visiting and in Blackheath, very nice food and service!
Great place, food, service, atmosphere. we where in five and between us we have pizza, pasta and losts of meat. fantastic!!!!. I love that place
Fantastic place, great atmosphere and food. Been going there for several years and I am hook with the place Love it
We were placed at the table near the loo, in the passage and we were disturbed all the time. We had to wait 45 minutes before our meal arrived. The food was OK, but not exceptional (especially for the price). We waited for our bill for 40 minutes and were forgotten, so we had to pay at the till. Bottom line: we are not going to return to this restaurant again!
Excellent service, food and evening! I took my husband here for his birthday and we had an amazing evening! Highly recommended - note you need to book in advance as this restaurant is always fully booked!
My wife and I had a fantastic meal here last night. Service was really friendly and the steaks amazing. We had a very reasonably priced carafe of Merlot and we thought the whole experience was faultless. I have been looking for years for a steakhouse that can cook a steak how I like it and now I have found it. 10/10
After making a reservation yesterday we turned up this evening only to be told no reservation was made. There was no apologies and was treated as if it was my fault. There happened to be an available table downstairs which we took as we were meeting people at the restaurant. The waitress was friendly enough and our food was tastey apart from my steak was overcooked. I really expected something special from this place but turned out to be distinctly average.
