  • I am very surprised by the negative comments posted below. I went to the B & L last month with a group of friends and had the most wonderful food, drinks, and service. Particular stand outs were the pea salad, mentioned in Time Out's review, the cote de boeuf - cooked to perfection - and the ice creams which are to die for. This place is well worth a visit, don't listen to the naysayers!

  • First time we made it to the Bull & Last after passing by several times. Might have chosen a bad day as we were totally oblivious about mother's day. We were offered a set menu and decided to give it a try. We are regular customers to local gastro pubs in the area and therefor know what we can expect. We must say that the B & L did not in the least live up to our expectations: The food was just about average, we had the soup, pasta and roast and ended up sending more than half of it back. The service was inattentive and at no point were we asked whether everything was alright. On top of this the bill came to more than 100 pounds for two people, leaving us with a foul taste. We have know problem paying more, if quality and service is of a certain standard. One should give every place a second chance, but in this case it will take us some month to reattempt.

  • Looking at the reviews i have to feel sorry for the staff here, although i haven’t eaten here and dont work in a gastro pub or any pub or restaurant but eat at a fair few. But when customers arrive demanding to eat outside when that is not the policy of the venue, and the customers seem to take offence to this...as they dont wish to leave their bicycles behind...because the dont have locks for their bikes...i think..maybe get locks for your bikes...or come back when you dont need to babysit your bikes...wonder what would happen if you tried that at other venues where the food is key and the customers dramas and bikes are not...dare them to do it at the Ivy or Nobu etc .......i want to go now to see if these drama queens with the bikes where justified with their reviews....

  • Waiting for an hour or more to get a simple charcuterie board. Told if I wait perhaps the kitchen will have time to make it. Another drink later and apparently the kitchen is too busy to make it. A cold platter, sliced meat and cheese is all we want. Willing to let a group of paying customers sit hungry rather than be accommodating. If you can't handle so many people then have less tables. Shoddy service...

  • I never got to eat here, so unfortunately this review won't be about the food. However in common with some others on here I found the staff so rude and unwelcoming I felt I had to put something up. We arrived on bikes and asked to sit outside in the sun so we could keep an eye on our bikes (we didn't have locks). We were flatly told no food would be served outside because "the manager says so". I hung around for a bit being ignored by the sullen faced waiting staff and eventually it was made clear although seats were available we couldn't leave our bikes anywhere so would have to leave. All this is fine perhaps, were it not for the manner of the staff. Rarely have I been made to feel less welcome in a restaurant, with the staff seemingly unable or unwilling to make even basic efforts to accommodate us, offer any form of token apology for being unable to do so or indeed muster a smile! This place has good reviews but this doesn't mean the staff can get away with treating customers in such a surly fashion. Frankly, great gastropubs are ten a penny in London and this is one that will never be getting my custom purely because of the attitude of their staff.

  • The staff here are always in a massive strop. The food is not high quality or value for money. £9 for a minuscule crab spaghettini starter full of bits of shell. Roasts are particularly bad - big sloppy, sinewy chunks of barely cooked roast beef, mountains of over-cooked veg and all yours for an eye-watering price.

  • Love this place. One of the best places to get proper British food. Ambience and ales were likewise excellent. For more exotic bitters, just down the road is the Southampton Arms which has loads of handpulled ales from microbreweries around. A really good experience!
