A useful bolt-hole if you don’t fancy the Opera House bars, this Covent Garden veteran is determinedly French in outlook. Done out with mini-chandeliers, dark alcoves and prints of prima ballerinas, the studiously inoffensive basement bar fills up quickly at peak times; a late licence allows for more protracted post-show drinking.

Wines are split between France and vins étrangers, with an emphasis on the former, especially among the reds. The quality is sound and there are around eight of each colour by the glass.

Bar food is standard brasserie fare: starters including onion soup and own-made terrine, followed by omelettes, steak, some large salads and moules marinière. The brasserie and restaurant menus are much more extensive, with prices much lower on the former (£6.50 for all starters and £10.50 all mains).

Food is undoubtedly good as is the service, however I avoided the loos due to reviews on here. I went with my boyfriend and our shared meal and four drinks between us came to a ridiculous price, I would recommend it for the food but the whole atmosphere was not desirable

Maybe the service is better if you are a fully paying customer, but as voucher holders my friend and I were treated like a pair of crims on the scrounge from the moment we arrived. There were several officious demands to see our code from various members of staff, and repeated requests for our names. The maitre d' insisted our reservation was for the previous day, having spent several minutes brusquely extracting our details with all the charm of an arresting officer. You were made to feel like a gatecrasher at some nasty club, to which you have in fact actually been invited, and on arrival have no wish to actually be. The food was adequate but nothing more- tho my mash was cold, being just over a tablespoon I didn't bother complaining- and I regretted my refusal of bread; the portions were so tiny I was still hungry after three courses. However the food came quickly despite it being very busy, hence the grudging star. Just don't go here-they don't deserve your business. Don't be fooled by the cosy title, you'll leave this place feeling hungry and insulted. I really wanted to ask for the service taken off, which as I former waitress I have never done, but by the end I just wanted to get out of there without any more unpleasantness. And yes the toilets are horrid. Avoid like the plague.

Was going to go to this place tonight but after reading the reviews by god no! Never been and never will. I refuse to take my children somewhere non-child friendly, and I hear the toilets are like a prison! Buck your ideas up chaps!

Disappointing experience. No intention to go back or recommend this restaurant favourably. OK if you want to leave HUNGRY! Arguably it was because our meal was on a Wowcher basis for two courses, including two bottles of wine for four people. Interminable wait for each course and difficult to get waiter's attention! Although menu was the same as those paying full price, we got minimal portions eg 3 cubes of venison and one baby carrot and sliver of mash. However, all around us people were receiving 'huge' portions. At the end of the meal they tried to charge us for 'rose wine', as it wasn't included in the price but no mention was made to us at any time! Also, no mention, at any time, of reduced portions because we were on a voucher basis! NEVER GOING BACK!

I have never written a review of anything but felt so compelled to i just couldn't not. Do forgive my writing, i'm not a wordsmith...... As my girlfriend and I arrived, the room was quite empty, a lady college showed us to the table right next to the kitchen and the counter, before sitting down we quickly asked if we could sit somewhere else... we ordered our meal to a nice friendly waitress. My Starter of mussels was pungent, it smelt like the sea and they tasted old as if they had been left out over night. My girlfriends pomegranate was fizzy... My main of steak came a little burnt for medium rare and with it a 'béarnaise sauce' which looked and tasted more like a bisto gravy than anything i've ever seen at restaurant in my life.. The wine was nothing special for £22. Our bill came to £75 with no desert. I've never felt so robbed in my life.. I whole heartedly recommend that you stay away from this once great restaurant. What a shame, one last thing, the mens loo's are awful

Very disappointing.... We tried to go yesterday for dinner with a reservation for 4 people, and when we get there promptly at the booking time, we are told we need to wait downstairs for 5-10min. It turned out to be more than 50min, at which point, after constantly asking for our table, we decided to leave. We were all the time very nice and understanding, but the most frustrating thing was the woman at the reception (brown hair, short, overweight, Eastern european accent), which couldnt care less about it and lied to us from the beginning by telling us that the customers in the table were already paying and leaving soon, saying this recurrently. When we said we would then have to leave as she wasnt sure when we would get a table, she just said: "Ah, ok, thanks.". She couldnt care less, what type of service is this???

Craig

Food average and service terrible, over priced and over-rated. We were asked to leave our table at 10.10pm, as they needed it for a 9.00pm booking, but we were still eating because they were so slow!!

The old reviews are good but recent ones are the new reality - dry and burnt chicken, limp salad, disappointing desserts. Something really wrong despite clean linens and decent wine list.
