Oscars is the neighbourhood café of dreams, an inviting space with mismatched furniture and a thoroughly Zen-like garden out back, offering the citizens of Ladywell great coffees, light lunches and bucketloads of welcome. The brew, made from Arabica beans, has an earthy, mellow flavour that had us hooked from day one. Sustenance comes in the form of artisanal sandwiches (made with upper crust bread from Blackheath’s Boulangerie Jade), quiches and salads, plus homemade soups, cakes and pastries, and a range of old-fashioned milkshakes blended to order. In keeping with the community feel, the café has recently begun to play host to a plethora of local art, which joins the existing floor-to-ceiling Klimt prints that so dazzle the eye.
