Cay Tre’s Shoreditch branch was closed for a refurb at the time of review, leaving the newer Soho outpost flying the flag for creative, mainly southern Vietnamese cooking.
The long, narrow room feels a world apart from the in-out caffs of the ‘Pho Mile’ on Kingsland Road; the slick, contemporary, monochrome design is enticing and devoid of any bamboo-and-conical-hat clichés. The cooking is also a lot more colourful and innovative than the standard spring rolls and pho (although both here are superb, the pho available in eight versions).
Staff can be a bit bullish when it comes to upselling: our waitress more or less told us we were having the special starter of steamed, dumpling-like rolls with ground pork and a fragrant dipping sauce (it was excellent). Also a winner was a main course of dong du lamb, a rich, spicy, Indian-accented curry with aubergine and curry-leaf. Other unusual dishes include surf clams with lemongrass and chilli, ox cheek ‘au vin’ with cinammon and cardamom, and black mushroom hotpot.
This is a great place to remind you that although the Vietnamese staples are great, variation executed with this level of skill is always welcome.
