Very much a local favourite for everything from casual suppers to birthday celebrations, Chapters suits a wide range of diners: couples on a date night, groups of chums, and families with small children. No mean feat, and staff work hard to keep things moving smoothly. There are breakfast, bar and brunch menus alongside the all-day list; service comes with a smile; and prices are pretty keen (the set meal deals and children’s menus are particularly good value).
Quality can fluctuate a bit, but beer-battered fish and chips with tartare sauce, and most things from the Josper grill (burger with all the trimmings and chips, spatchcock chicken with lemon and thyme, ribeye and fillet steaks) are safe bets. Most recently, asparagus with a ‘crispy’ poached egg and apple and walnut salad was a stellar starter, but omelette arnold bennett overfaced us – richly savoury, yet a relentlessly big portion with little in the way of contrasting accompaniment.
A global wine list has plenty of options by the glass and 500ml pichet. The modern decor plays it safe, with the light-filled ground floor being preferable to the basement, and pavement tables available for drinks.

I wouldn't rave about it. It's good for Blackheath maybe, where there are only chain restaurants and generic Italians and that's why it stands out. Staff was attentive, the house wine was good but the food was unremarkable. Unlikely to recommend or return.
We had a small family gathering at Chapters in Blackheath last Sunday to celebrate 3 birthdays. We had never been before, but found the experience very enjoyable; the food was excellent, but I would have appreciated a few more vegetarian/vegan options, seeing that two in our number were vegetarian, and one did not like goat's cheese in particular. Unfortunately we had to leave earlier than liked because of family sickness, but we were unanimous that we would go again. To be recommended
I was unimpressed when we had a birthday party here this morning.We were seated downstairs which i did not object to.However we had to keep going upstairs to the upper floor to get the attention of the staff which i object strongly too.Staff were attentive when around but there should be someone on the lower floor or alternatively they should of sat us upstairs!! Also the cheese sauce on my eggs benedict was far too cheesy and this was mentioned by another friend who had the eggs florentine.I will not be going there again for breakfast and if i do i will certainly not be shoved away downstairs where you struggle for service!!!
Went last night to celebrate my girlfriends birthday. I've used Chapter One many times over the last ten years and thought I'd give this one a try. It is quite different. After waiting a long time to order, we were then told that five dishes were off. Not recently off, during the afternoon. This severly restriced a not particularly extensive menu. Starters and mains turned up almost instantly! The food was mediocre and certainly does not warrant the price tag. We then waited over twenty minutes for puddings during which time a visit to the toilets found them lacking in basic hygiene. There was no alternative to the out of order hand drier. Feedback to staff on issues experianced were greeted with a 'so what' kind of apology. As long as they are busy, I don't think they care. I won't be going to Chapters again, there are far better alternatives in this price bracket.
Dined here last night for a wedding anniversary in a group of 7. Sat downstairs on a large round table, ideal for a group of our size. Found the restaurant decor very modern and warm, with low level lighting and dark wooden tables. I had the quail to start which was really tasty with the carrot, orange and vanilla puree which accompanied it. My main was rib eye steak which I loved (medium rare), best one I've had in years. I "sampled" some of the other meals that the family had ordered...I enjoyed the scallop starter, the pork main was lovely as well however the tagliatelle lacked flavour. My aunt and uncle were celebrating their anniversary and received a small dessert dish on the house (ice cream, brownie chunks and strawberries) with Happy Anniversary scribed in chocolate sauce around the edge of the dish. It wasn't excessive by any means but a nice touch nonetheless. Service was standard but the food (aside from the tagliatelle) was of really good quality and our meal was £240 for the group of 7, including 3 bottles of wine and two courses each for all but one of us. I'd recommend Chapters and would go again.
Extremely unattentive service despite there being stacks of staff and very few other diners. Characterless surroundings. Lengthy wait for food (though when it did come it was pretty good). To top it off, an error in the bill and service charge added automatically!
Came a second time to give it another chance after big diappointment the first time. Food was very poor quality and extremely over priced for what it was. I asked for the special which I was told was brown trout, different to that on the main meu - however it was exactly the same as the rainbow trout my daughter had ordered. It came on a bed of sad, greasy cous-cous that I wouldn't feed my dog. Trout was tired and tasteless. Daughters meal also poor. The waiter asked if we had enjoyed the meal, and unfortunately I could only say that we hadn't, very unprofessional reactions - manager rude and arrogant and his excuse was, 'we are not a fine dining restaurant', a direct contradiction of what the waiter had boasted. The manager seemed to imply that if the food was not burnt and was enough then we should be happy. I have never experienced such poor and actually rude service before, unfortunately I also wanted my food to taste good, and I was very disappointed. The price I then paid for my disappointment was outragous.
Came here for lunch and was blown away by the Pot Roast Belly with remoulade. I can't wait to come back to this place for dinner.
