Situated on a bustling stretch of Northcote Road, sandwiched in by pretty boutiques, Crumpet is an ideal stop for mums-that-lunch.
A substantial children’s menu is at the heart of the café, full of tot-pleasing fare from Marmite on toast to fairy cakes and ice-cream. For the grown-ups, there are deep-filled sarnies on granary bread, beefy jacket potatoes and an outstanding welsh rarebit smothered with quality mature cheddar and just a smattering of worcestershire sauce.
To drink, the Union coffee is overshadowed by loose-leaf tea that arrives in a pot large enough for two. There are more than ten blends from which to choose, and staff are happy to recommend something to suit your taste.
Crumpet isn’t always the most serene spot to enjoy a cuppa – after all, the spacious café comes complete with a kids’ play den and a family bathroom with a mini-toilet – but it’s an accommodating and cheerful neighbourhood joint.
