Though Donna Margherita is just across the road from Battersea Arts Centre, a pre-theatre pizza may end up causing you to miss the first half, such is the laid-back, friendly service here. Popular with families in the early evening and local young professionals later on, the restaurant could be the set for a typical Naples pizzeria, with its faded black and white photos and Napoli shirts hanging from a line.
The grubby yellow awning and curling framed menu outside may look tired, but the kitchen keeps turning out reliably good wood-fired pizzas featuring unusual toppings such as leafy friarielli (rapini), along with several folded pizzas. A grilled aubergine version was nicely scorched, and two pasty-sized prawn and pesto calzoni made with wholemeal flour were surprisingly light.
There’s also a range of fresh pastas, antipasti (including a selection of fritti), and own-made desserts of variable quality (dry, grainy tiramisu is not a guaranteed ‘pick-me-up’). The all-Italian wine list pushes the pricier ‘selected’ bottles, but the barbera replacing the usual house sangiovese was a great match for pizza.
