I visited the Exmouth Market branch of the Hummus-touting chain with the recent TimeOut voucher clutched in my fist. £5 for a main, a side and a drink - a good deal for a work-day lunch. The times on the voucher were a tad restrictive, so I tipped up at 11.30. Sadly the experience didn't get off to a brilliant start with my welcome, which was pretty cold. I persevered however, as I'd already pre-paid. The menu is confusing to the uninitiated, but it was just expected that I'd now how it worked and there was very little explanation of the dish combinations or what was included. I plumped for the chicken main, hummous, flatbread and a side of tabbouleh. A drink was included, so I tried the lemonade. The restaurant was empty (my fault for going so early) and there were no further customers as I ate. The presentation was pretty, the flatbread and hummous were tasty and moreish, and the homemade lemonade refreshing - but that's where the positives end. The chicken had a slightly odd smell and taste - I was unsure if it was the particular tastes and spices used or if it just wasn't good chicken. As I was the first customer of the day I was expecting something fresh tasting - and this wasn't it. I left a fair amount of it on my plate. The tabbouleh was fresh, but again tasted slightly strange. Perhaps my tastebuds were not aligned with the cuisine, but it tasted quite unpleasant and made me feel a tad nauseous. This all of course could have been down to my personal taste buds, but it was rather disappointing all the same. An acceptable lunch for £5, but I can't say I'll be returning even if there's another offer.
