‘Give peas a chance’ is the cheeky slogan for this laid-back snack bar devoted to the humble chickpea or, more precisely, its creamy offshoot, houmous. This Soho shop, with its shiny red communal tables, bench seating and large windows overlooking Wardour Street, is the original. There are also branches in Holborn and near St Paul’s; we’d be happy to see them everywhere. Order and pay for your meal at the counter; at lunchtime, the queue for takeaways snakes out on to Wardour Street. You’ll get a bowl of silky-smooth houmous, with a dollop of tahini, a sprinkling of paprika and two warm wholemeal pittas (regular size – just one pitta with the small), plus a topping of your choice. Chunky slow-cooked beef, perhaps, or juicy guacamole with red peppers and red onions, or our favourite, mashed, cumin-scented fava beans. You can add a side salad – options include zingy tabouleh made with plenty of parsley, or barbecued aubergine – or customise your plate with extras such as tortilla chips, carrot sticks or hard-boiled egg. Fresh mint and ginger lemonade is the perfect match for the Middle Eastern flavours, or there are coffees and juices. The young international staff keep things moving smoothly.
