Set in the premises of a longstanding Vietnamese community centre, behind a hedge and indicated only by a small sign, Huong-Viet feels like a bit of a secret. It’s well known among locals, though, looking for Vietnamese food a little north of the main Shoreditch drag.
Inside, the windowless space has an intimate, homely feel. When things get busy, the staff can become abrupt and some dishes can be average, but on the whole the place is lively and fun.
Starters such as traditional Vietnamese pancakes, spring rolls and crispy seaweed give on to a long list of mains, including pork with aubergine and garlic, sizzling prawns with ginger and spring onion, and more unusual barbecue dishes such as prawns wrapped in pork. Vietnamese special salad mixed grated crudités with a little pineapple, topped with crushed peanuts – a combination that was pleasantly sweet, zingy and crunchy. Rice vermicelli with seafood, lemongrass and chilli was a big bowlful, with plenty of seafood, including scallops, subtle spicing, and mint adding a distinctive herby edge. Good, honest, flavourful food – and good value too.
