Whitecross Street has become a destination for street food on Thurday and Friday lunchtimes, with stalls selling hog roast sandwiches, burritos, falafel wraps, jerk chicken and more besides. But in wintry weather, the indoor seating of the market street’s cafés beckon. Iskele’s the pick of them, a new ‘Mediterranean’ restaurant on a spacious site with coloured glass pendant laterns and other knick-knacks that give it an Anatolian feel.
Although the menu is wide-ranging and includes Italian pasta dishes and a few continental favourites, we recommend sticking with the Turkish dishes, as this is what they do best. The meze can be ordered in a small or large portions, the larger one – at £15.90 for two people – being a meal in itself. Highlights of the procession of small dishes included creamy houmous topped with broad beans and sprinkled with sumac; a warm salad of grilled aubergine, smoky from the char-grill; kisir, the salad of fresh parsley chopped up with tomatoes, crushed wheat, onion, olive oil and lemon juice; and deep-fried pastries filled with cheese called böreks.
