Jones Dairy sits on a narrow cobbled side street off Columbia Road, its interior a charming one-time stable with a huge, picturesque stove occupying one corner and a tiny counter another. It’s a ramshackle affair, all mismatched tables and chairs, and the kind of granny crockery you’d once have found on Brick Lane for pennies. Outside, a few equally rickety tables are perfect for sunny days – unless it’s a Sunday, when the parade of people tottering along with huge plants from Columbia Road Flower Market can be overwhelming.
Daily specials (written on a board) include smoked salmon with fennel and orange salad, and flaky, crumbly pasties and rolls, while mainstays include a range of all-day breakfasts, from traditional fry-ups to the likes of Mersea Island oysters and Norfolk herring kippers. All are excellent, come with bread and butter (you can help yourself to jams and preserves from a tray), are reasonably priced and served by friendly staff, making the experience a retro one in the best sense.
