Kateh

Roaringly busy throughout the week, this Persian restaurant is well hidden among the elegant houses of Warwick Avenue. Just a handful of tables are packed into a tight, conspicuously plain space.

The atmosphere is provided by elbow-to-elbow diners and by furiously enthusiastic staff who tear around delivering refined, modern Iranian dishes, and chip in with friendly chatter. If you’re after a bit of privacy (or peace), head for the small basement room, which features a communal table and a pretty courtyard; romantically low lit, it’s ideal for an intimate party. In fact, Kateh is a great special-occasion destination. With a menu that’s a touch more expensive than the average for its type, and an arty, contemporary approach to plating up, it has the air of a smart European brasserie and the clientele to match.

Hearty classics, such as ghalieh mahi (an excellent fish stew made tart with tamarind) and saffron-marinated grilled meats, feature alongside less defiantly Persian dishes – a charred sardine, basil and lemon starter, for example, minced veal kebab, or a frozen blueberry yoghurt dessert. It’s a creative and appealing mix, made more so by the quality of ingredients, the warm service and the stylish surroundings.

We had a reservation made on the 11.th of july at 20:15 for two people at the restaurant named “Kateh”. Best way to review this restaurant is to say: “Five-star food with some zero-star waiter!”

We are regular customers USUALLY we had nice service and we always satisfied with the food quality. Today one of the waiter ruined our whole opinion about this place! After I asked for the bill, the bill was £69, so I left £70 on the table then I went to the washroom. While my girlfriend was waiting for the waiter to take the payment away.

The waiter arrived to our table and counted that £70.  But instead of walking away with the money. He pointed out to my girlfriend on the receipt said:” YOU DO REALISED THAT THE SERVICE CHARGE IS NOT INCLUDED”. My girlfriend answered:Yes. When I came back to the table we just left the change. This waiter chased me said:’” Keep your coins! We don’t need THIS”.

It is customer’s right to decide if they wanna give service charge or not in this case. How ridicules and how dare this waiter to ASK the customer for Money?! I believe if there was £5 left on the table, this waiter would have NEVER chased me up INSIDE of the restaurant! Telling me that “We don’t need it”! But he did chased me up to say - KEEP your change. This is beyond any stand of the restaurant! We wouldn’t ever expecting this to happen!

Regardless that he was clearly not impressed that I did’n tip him.

I don’t understand why he need to point this out to a lady. He couldn’t wait for me instead, what does he EXPECT out of this?! Even if we wanted to leave tip, normally the tip should be done by AFTER the waiter took to payment. So which means even we wanted to leave any tip. After for what he said is NOT GOING TO HAPPENING anyway!

His attitude was completely UNEXPECTABLE. We’ve never had any this DISGUSTING experience, basically the waiters ASKING for money and nasty behaviour like this.

Good food - but really bad service. Made a reservation Monday 7.30 - but when I showed up there was no table available for 2 persons. There were multiple tables for 4 which they wanted to keep available for others. They first asked us to wait 15 min outside (!) until a table cleared. When that did not happen they shoved me and my friend to the basement where they were redecorating - and nobody else. After 1 hour waiting in the paint fumes - they were able to seat us upstairs - and no apologies whatsoever. Will not go again.

Poor poor service and average food. The owner has no sense of customer service and is terribly rude. We will never return. Too noisy and uncomfortable.

Time out and the other reviewers must be crazy. The most delicious food. Possibly ever.

This is a restaurant only a few minutes from my home, so I've always wanted to try it. We made a confirmed reservation last Friday through Top Table for 6:45. Upon arrival, the manager did not have the reservation and would not honour the one made through Top Table. She said, "this always happens". After much anguish, she offered us a table, but only if we could eat quickly in under an hour. We said no thanks. Keep in mind the restaurant was 90% empty at the time. I asked her why she wouldn't take any responsibility for the business relationship between her restaurant, Kateh, and the booking company Top Table. She refused to take ownership of the problem. I have a distinct feeling that they use Top Table for backfilling at Kateh's convenience. It just felt self-serving and a bit sleazy to be honest. I won't be giving them a second chance because she could have professionally dealt with the situation, instead she chose to stick it to the customer. Kateh's loss. There is always the delicious Pars restaurant within a 10 minutes' walk, authentic, customer-centric, and a fraction of the cost. Recommendation: Book only directly through the restaurant and confirm before going in case you "vanish" from the reservation list.

The best Persian food in London. This restaurant is not a Kebab & Rice like may other Iranian restaurants. Kateh serves very high quality Persian food as normally prepared at home. The restaurant is well managed and the service very efficient.

A well kept neighbourhood secret. I've never experienced poor service, far from it. The staff are of mixed nationality and usually excellent. My favourite is the prawn starter, and also I love the simple Joojeh: chicken and rice. Last time I went, a week ago, the chef had made a delicious Persian soup which was astounding.

Had an amazing time here, perfect venue for a date. Staffed with most hospitable Persian waitresses, gave me the feeling of dining in Shiraz with vine leaves hanging off the ceiling. Affordable too!

Was there yesterday, have been a few times, the food is fantastic, the service very good, the catch being that it’s expensive, and you end up paying almost 2x of what it would have cost in Alounak. Kateh's koofteh berenji is out of this world though, so worth checking out if you don’t fancy the queue at the ‘nak.
