Cabbies love it, fish is brought in daily from Billingsgate, and service is so no-nonsense it’s entertaining – Masters ticks a lot of ‘London institution’ boxes. Step through from the small takeaway section into a simple dining room painted floor-to-ceiling turquoise. Fellow diners, from older couples to office workers and tourists, sit at functional tables that lend a canteen feel to the place. Food, though, is of a high quality. Starters showcased the fruits of the fryer, from spring rolls to whitebait and battered mussels, but we stuck to the complimentary bread and cold prawn.
A wide range of fish comes either battered or grilled (generally pricier). Classic cod was generously sized and delivered quick-sharp from the fryer, its soft flesh suggesting freshness. Grilled tuna had the thickness of two T-bone steaks and showed good grill-bar charring, though its dryness needed the rich tartare sauce and free juicy pickles to provide lubrication. Accompanying chips were pale and uninteresting, yet so hot they practically fizzed. You can bring your own booze here, despite wine being available from £10.95 a bottle.

5 stars for the quality of the cod & chips but -2 stars for the quality of the service and attitude of the staff working there. Be aware that this place does not accept your own booze (not beer/lager anyway) and do charge £5 corkage on wine.
I + family have been coming here for cod & chips dinners over 20 years. Friends joke I must have shares in the place.! Fish always fresh & crisp,('tho I hardly believe your viewer who mentions almond oil as the medium!), chips freshly made, starter of 3 prawns + French bread/butter is a bonus. Portions are very generous. The best gherkins in London come free as do pickled onions. Tartar sauce & tomato ketchup come in sauce boats & stay on the table - no mingy, rancid sachets that get served up elsewhere. The prices are unbeatable value. The menu pretty varied if you don't want cod. Staff are friendly and helpful
There were four early January 2014 because, simple restaurant, but super tasty fish and chips. Very nice and courteous staff, reasonably priced lunch menu including a drink. Although off the beaten track but well away from the London Eye, Tate Modern, just a few minutes walk. The restaurant has about 30 seats. Simply good.
Excellent fish & chips quite a large portion aswell great value for money the staff were very friendly I have recommended the restaurant to several friends for when they are in the area
I had a Master Special here when I went to London with my brother. Best Fish and chips I have ever tasted, its been 4 years and I still remember it lol, fantastic food, great service and healthy as they cook in almond oil. The portions are too generouse, and myself being a foody this is nothing to be complaining about.
A very good chippie. I'm relatively new to the area and the shop was recommended by some local 'proper' sarf Londoners, plus was also intrigued by the large amount of black taxi cabs parked outside around dinner time most days - as any Londoner knows, the cabbies know London and therefore know the best/value for money places to eat (it also has a lot of police cars/vans stopping for dinner, which must be a similar badge of decent quality - so don't go there if you're on the run ;) All their fish is cooked fresh to order, so you'll be unhappy if you're hoping to run in, point at a piece of cooked fish and get out quickly as you'll have to wait for them to cook your fish, but it's well worth it in my experience and I have not been disappointed yet. I'm sure there are better places if you're willing to travel, but if you are in the area and fancy a fish supper, it's certainly the best one around here and I'm very happy to have a found a local chippie that satisfies.
I paid my first visit here last Friday. Basic, yet pleasant, surroundings with interesting framed photos on the walls. Free prawns and bread & butter starer was nice. Service friendly. Cod & chips fine. A decent price. Will go again.
We used to go there more often but recently we had few bad experiences in a row. We ordered the master cod but was given a portion smaller than the standard portion ordered by the next table. The first two times we thought they were busy and things do happen, but when it happened again we thought perhaps there is something wrong?? I checked with my Chinese friends who also felt that they have a different service to Chinese customers. I have in fact seen the chef shouting at one of the Chinese waitress. Being a customer you can easily tell which restaurant is friendly and which is not. I suppose both the restaurant and us have a choice as to whom to serve and where to go for your meal. I would not recommend any Chinese to visit this restaurant.
excellent fish! take away is great value - especially as a master's special is quite ample for two even quite hungry mouths - but even if you want to pig out and go it alone its still pretty cheap. chips aren't great however. Can't really comment on the service as i hardly ever eat in. As for the comment below about lazy cooking - i can't say i'd agree with this- at a push i might apply it to the chips (i always think they could do with an extra minute or so), but the fish is almost always spot on, and delicious.
It's gone off, recently. Despite lazy cooking and haphazard service, it's still full, often with pensioner outings and coach parties, which means that if you can't eat what they bring you - for example if the fish is grey and foul-tasting - they still charge you for it. If geography isn't important - Kennedy's in Islington and Fish Central near the Barbican are infinitely superior in this price bracket.
Restored faith in you can get a quality and excellent meal in London without extortionate pricing. Excellent value for money, clean and good service. Well done.
Dined here last week when staying at the Travelodge 2 or 3 doors up the road. Delicious food, very efficient service, great value. I'll be back.
Masters is the Best Fish & Chip shop in London. Everything is cooked to order so you have to wait a bit, but it's well worth the wait. The fish is always perfectly cooked, as are the chips. If you eat in, you get free shrimps and bread, and wallys are offered if you want them. RECOMMENDED
Regular visitor every time I visit London. Service can be slow when the crowds decend upon the place, but nevertheless, the restaurant wants you to eat and leave so someone else can have your table. So service will happen. Portions are generous.
