This long-standing chippy resembles a retro greasy spoon, with exposed brickwork offset by turquoise walls peppered with prints of soap stars and comedians of yesteryear.
Although known for its popularity with cabbies, the takeaway counter was empty and the dining room eerily quiet on a Wednesday lunchtime. Specials available included mackerel and turbot, but we opted for the more traditional cod and scampi. Our efficient waitress delivered complimentary appetisers, which were as retro as the decor; baguette slices and a few cooked prawns (with roe).
The scampi was rather overwhelmed by its batter, but the cod arrived perfectly cooked, with pleasingly crisp batter. Hand-cut chips (a little soggy in places) were piled high, and helped along by own-made gherkins, pickled onions and jugs of ketchup and tartare sauce. Portions veer on the unconquerable in size; a ‘half chips, half salad’ option is also available.
Worth considering if you happen to be in the area, attending a play at the Young or Old Vic, perhaps, but not one to go out of your way for.
