A well-established favourite on civilised Exmouth Market, Moro is renowned for its high-quality Spanish/North African food, simply cooked and presented with a twist. On our last visit, we were disappointed to be seated in the small conservatory-like area around the corner at the back, as the main restaurant has much more buzz. But the food, and the helpful staff, more than compensated.
Starters of chargrilled squid with grilled pepper salad, lemon and capers, and broad bean, green almond and zataar (a Middle Eastern spice blend) salad with mojama (thinly sliced air-dried tuna), blew us away with their punchy flavours – the squid, in particular, was sublime. Wood-roasted chicken with onion, sumac and pine nut salad, and chargrilled sea bass with spiced rice and fried okra in yoghurt with pomegranate, also more than lived up to their lengthy descriptions. The expertly balanced flavours were enhanced by the extraordinary variety of textures: sensual dining of the highest order.
For dessert, yoghurt cake with pistachios and pomegranate shouldn’t be missed. The Spanish-oriented wine list is divided by style (crisp and dry, fruity, and so on), and includes plenty of sherries, dessert wines and ports. If the restaurant is full, eat from the excellent tapas menu while perched on a stool at the bar.
