number 22 feels like a completely new restaurant! the new layout following the flood really works... it's inviting even before you go in! - knowledgeable staff, delicious food (and wine), buzzy atmosphere - everything you'd want from a decent tapas - although this feels a bit more high end than your average fare! hats off to the owner, you've done a really good job - we'll be back for more soon.

It’s not often a restaurant that has offered a reliably similar experience year on year suddenly develops the ability to surprise, but Number 22 has done just that. It’s much the same in looks: a narrow corridor of a restaurant with dark wood furnishings, olive green walls and contemporary art on display. There’s also a walled patio in the back with boldly painted walls, which is ideal for a leisurely glass of Alhambra. What’s different is the food: it has always been good but not necessarily so good that it became memorable.
This time, each dish hit the mark impeccably. Breaded baby squid was crisp on the outside yet cooked to perfection with a smooth morcilla stuffing; fried rounds of aubergine avoided the trap of becoming greasy and were well seasoned and moreish; tender strips of just-pink duck breast were complemented by a light, sweet quince sauce; crisp pork belly on a smooth pear purée with plump, juicy raisins made for a satisfying combination of salty and sweet.
The space is small and the atmosphere intimate, with low lighting and flickering candlelight in the evening, yet it comfortably houses couples and groups in a convivial atmosphere.

Had a delightful lunch here with friends. The tapas was deliciously inventive and exceeded all expectations. The kind of quality you would expect from a West end restaurant but with a local feel and reasonable prices. I'm looking forward to going again!
This is a great little local restaurant with an extensive wine list, knowledgeable and friendly staff and excellent food made with top quality ingredients. I very much enjoyed the aged Zamorano cheese and the chorizo and squash was so tasty I needed to ask for more bread so as not to let the delicious sauce go to waste.
This is a lovely local restaurant, which I am lucky to have nearby. The chicken and chorizo paella is to die for, and the selection of sherries and wines have been well thought out. However the reason I always return is the relaxed cosy atmosphere and the friendly staff. It's a real gem of a restaurant which I hope will remain in the heart of Herne Hill for a very long time to come.
Number 22 is an intimate local gem in Herne Hill - where it's very easy to while away a lovely evening nibbling on delicious tapas, or a whole lazy Sunday afternoon when they serve up beautiful, tasty paella which is the best I've had outside of Spain. At it's best when it can be eaten al fresco in the enchanting patio garden out the back. Last visit we started our night with martinis at the bar - the cocktail list is extensive and they're lovingly crafted to perfection. We shared tapas - succulent, salty Padron Peppers, warm and wintery Chorizo and Canellinni beans, Spanish Charcuterie - all washed down with a perfect red wine recommended by the friendly, passionate staff. We'll be back soon for more ... I
The fire is glowing, the candles twinkling; I have a glass of rich rioja in my hand and a veritable banquet of unusual and appetising Spanish food in front of me....must be No 22! Thi splace never disappoints. The menu (constantly creative) offers a great range to suit all tastes and pockets, and the wine list must surely be one of the most extensive yet reasonably priced I have ever seen. Opted for the chicken and chorizo paella last night, preceded by a plate of pinxos, followed by a plate of delicious chees to share. My friends had a whole range of delights; cuttlefish, lamb cutlets, partridge....all, without exception, delicious. Just wish I lived closer...
The renaissance in Brixton's dining options means Number 22 has more competition for our attention than it once did. But on the strength of last week's visit we'll certainly be heading towards Herne Hill for a long time yet. It's a simple recipe: relaxed atmosphere, friendly but efficient service plus great food and drinks. Favourites on Thursday were king fish with celeriac, caramelised onions and pine nuts and the iberico pork cheek in red wine.
Outstanding food that always seems to amaze. The staff could not be more hospitable and are always willing to make recommendations. I really enjoy their choices of wines and offer different selections each week. I would highly recommend visiting 22 for a great evening out with that special someone, or with a group of people.
Thoroughly enjoyable meal with great, knowledgeable service, fantastic wine and outstanding food - was a really seasonal menu with a beautifully moist partridge dish and the Iberico pork loin was to die for!
Have never been disappointed in this lovely little place. They always have a range of imaginative dishes and an impressive wine list. There's a real sense that both owner/staff know exactly what they are about. One of my favourites.
Number 22 is simply fabulous. Great food (much better than the vast majority of London tapas bars), impressive wine list, intimate decor, and friendly and well-informed staff. I'd really recommend this local gem!
Dining at Number 22 the other week, I had as enjoyable an experience as I always have – great food, delicious wine and friendly staff. "Tapas with a twist" can be a hard act to pull off but Number 22 does it consistently. I went on a Thursday for a mid-week catch-up with friends. We started with four different pintxos, while there was the staple ones of jamon , the babganoush pintxo was my favourite. Next were the croquettes, not your usual chicken croquettes, one was with prawns and the other artichoke – yum! The two meat dishes that we chose were lamb cutlets and quail. The quail with its accompanying sauce was good, but the lamb cutlets were delicious. An absolute winner. Dessert isn't really my thing, and I found the espresso jelly and cream a bit, erm, creamy, but I did steal some of my friend's chocolate mousse….I know what I'll be having for dessert when I return next time!
A real gem to have as a local. A constantly changing and inventive tapas menu and a really well priced sherry/wine list. Not a cheap, bog standard tapas place, but the quality really justifies the price. Seared tuna with saffron puree was a highlight on my last visit a couple of weeks ago. Look forward to visiting again soon!
this place is very pleasant , waitresses are knowledgeable and helpful! The food is amazing, the rabbit served with green olives and lemon is the winner ! So is the seared tuna with its saffron and celeriac purée! I highly recommend it! The wine I had was delicious!
Lovely food, amazing cocktails!!! Worth while paying for quality. Had an amazing time!!! Intimate atmosphere, perfect for small groups or couples. So glad it's my local :)
