Sleek dark furnishings, contemporary art-for-sale and deep olive green walls create a stylish feel to this narrow but cosy venue. Number 22’s classy demeanour reflects its menu, which uses high-quality ingredients to create a modern take on tapas, and throws in a few more substantial dishes to boot. Prices aren’t cheap, but the atmosphere is far from pretentious and staff will help you select a good spread of food. The menu is refreshed daily, with seasonal ingredients given their due. Purple sprouting broccoli with garlic and chorizo made a delicious tapa and worked well as a foil to more fatty (but no less delicious) dishes of fried monte enebro cheese and jamón serrano croquetas. Meat comes from well-known local butcher William Rose; veal cheeks with a provençal sauce made an interesting addition to the menu on this occasion. On Sundays, three types of paella are served, so if you happen to catch a sunny day, head for the sweet little courtyard at the back, which is ideal for enjoying a leisurely Cruzcampo along with seafood, meat or vegetarian rice. An intimate little restaurant that’s ideal for couples or small groups of friends.
