On first appearances, Pizza Metro is your textbook local Italian: all terracotta tiling and rustic trattoria trappings. Its distinguishing feature, however (and the clue is in the name), is the firm’s claim to serve ‘London’s longest pizza’. We didn’t bring a tape measure, but for every two-person order from the pizza menu, you’ll receive a mammoth, metre-sized portion piping hot from the restaurant’s wood-fired oven. No wonder the joint is popular with groups.
Diners can share an array of flavours, with their pizzas served on a raised platform adjusted to fit the length of the table. Toppings range from own-made meatballs to aubergine parmigiana. Vegetarians are well served; our mixed mushroom, truffle oil and rocket made a rich foil for the thin base, surrounded by a pleasing doughy crust. A ricotta and aubergine pizza slightly missed the mark, having an over-abundance of curd cheese.
Pasta, meat and fish mains are all available, though the real draw is the pizza – which almost all diners had ordered on our Monday outing. We were given the hard sell for desserts: without us ordering, selections were paraded underneath our noses (which didn’t have the required effect).
