  • It was okay, nothing special. Fish didn't taste that fresh - I think maybe the oil was a bit stale, or it was overcooked (I had haddock). Chips underdone - not crisp enough. Tartar sauce not brilliant, either. Peas cold when they arrived, but I couldn't be bothered to complain because I was just underwhelmed by the whole place. Music too loud and the air raid sirens would keep me away forever. The one plust point was the fact they played the original Marvellettes version of Please Mr Postman, not the Beatles or, worse, Carpenters recordings.

  • Very fresh fish. Plaice was very thick and tasted excellent. The haddock was equally great. Chips were very fresh tasting. They use ground nut oil which gives it a great flavour (they do veg oil at request for allergy sufferers). This and one other restaurant are my favourite in London.

  • Five stars, sorry but you must be crazy! The waiting team were lovely. But the fish (grilled haddock) had been over cooked and the chips were only so so. Toffs in Muswell Hill is about 10x better.

  • Great stuff. Not sure about James's review "Best place for fish and chips is masters in waterloo. Fish bought in billinsgate that morning". Since you went for fish and chips on a Sunday, quite how Masters would get the fish fresh that day from Billingsgate when its closed is beyond my comprehension.

  • Music terrible. Sit in the back if you don't want to hear it so much. Staff must have to listen to it constantly. Everything else really first class.

  • This is the first time I've had fish and chips in a long time.. And I have definitely been missing out! Since visiting Poppies Fish and Chips for the first time a couple of days ago I have been having cravings for their melt in the mouth food since. They also have great customer service and a fast moving queue! So i'll definitely be going back soon, and would recommend it to anyone in the area for lunch/dinner/late nights!

  • Went for takeaway on Sunday and was disappointed unfortunately as I was really looking for a decent place for fish and chips around my area (whitechapel.) The interior is pretty superficial and the staff who I dealt with were far from cockney types..' both issues I could easily overlook. I just found the quality of the fish inferior, batter was greasy and the chips sub standard. Best place for fish and chips is masters in waterloo. Fish bought in billinsgate that morning, battered to order and large portions (with free bread, prawns, gerkin, pickled onion and sauce.) Although the staff are a bit sombre, it's a lot more genuine. Not a bad experience but I haven't been back since.

  • My partner and I were suspicious when this place opened on the site of one of our favourite old greasy spoons. We are sensitive to the fragile Commercial Street trench that divides such hallowed institutions as Sandra Esquilant's Golden Heart Pub and Jon Twomey's Ten Bells from the refurbished Spitalfields monster across the way and view each new venture on 'our' side with laughable prejudice. In the case of Poppies we couldn't have been more wrong. We would normally head to St.John's after a pint at the Golden Heart but instead found ourselves smoking a cigarette quite close to the entrance of Poppies and thought we would give it a try. I don't have multiple visits to cross-reference, nor, after a couple pints of Adnams was I of the most critical mind but I found the whole experience nothing short of amazing. The energy, the details, the staff and not least the fish were all fantastic. And obviously we came out probably 100 quid better off than if we had wandered in the other direction and for food that is no less deserving of the monikers 'simple' and 'modern British'. We found the whole experience similar to a venture from one of our favourite West London restaurateurs Tom Conran, whose theme restaurants far from delivering a sense of cynical marketting provide such complete quality and attention to detail that you just feel great whatever brow (hi or lo) it is supposed to subscribe to. For us at least Poppies did exactly that. Loved it!
