‘Good animal husbandry comes at a price to all of us,’ says the blackboard on the wall, reminding everyone that all of Baker & Spice’s chicken is organic, and sourced from small free-range flocks. But like the other messages from the management dotted around this bakery, takeaway and café, the tone is unfortunately imperious. Staff are sweet, however, and the food is generally good, if pricey (a plate of four salads is £15). Large glasses of water are poured unbidden and the pâtisserie section overflows with scrumptious things – pecan slices, rugelach, macaroons, chocolate fudge cake, muffins and more.
