We know that Christ Church Spitalfields is down the road, but even so, the owners of this cocktail bar/steakhouse were cheeky in naming it after such a notable London architect. It’s hard to imagine a more undistinguished exterior, a flat-fronted office block with no character or charm. Inside, the design is nothing special either; the unsubtle lighting and whitewashed walls only emphasise the low ceilings, while the open-plan layout draws attention to the uneasy way that drinkers mix with diners. Happily, the food transcends its surroundings. You won’t go away hungry: the portion of ribs served as a starter was bigger than a main course in some American eateries we could name, and the pork chop was positively immense. What’s more, the quality matches the quantity. The meat is sourced from the Ginger Pig and the kitchen seems happy to let the animals do the talking, delivering a sturdy menu free of unnecessary complication. Supplement the refreshingly unshowy cooking with the fabulous cocktail list (great value too), terrific service and the ‘go on, you know you want to’ range of desserts, and you have a very impressive operation. Now, about that room…

We had the pork ribs to begin - delicious and tender with a wonderful marinade that wasn't overpowering like a glaze would have been. I then had the 600g rib-eye, with my wife having the smallest fillet steak they had (300g). The meat was really something else - very flavourful and tender and despite the size, I had no problem polishing off my 600g (though I had to help my wife with her 300g...). We also ordered the field mushrooms to share and a portion of fries each. The mushrooms are thoroughly recommended - incredibly flavoursome and perfect with steak. The fries were good, but not exceptional. One very small quibble on my steak - it was verging on medium, despite having ordered it medium-rare (my wife's on the other hand was cooked perfectly).
My wife couldn't manage any more, but I had the plum crumble and icecream - very tasty indeed and heartily satisfying for those with an exceptional appetite (hey, it was my birthday...).
Finally, one warning - it all adds up. Steaks for around £30, plus all the sides, starters, desserts, a glass of wine each and sparkling water and a cocktail each to start and we were looking at about £150 for two by the end. Very much worth it if you can afford it, even just once a year...
